SungKyunKwan's H Lab (Humaneer Lab.) under the direction of Prof. Jun Dong Cho, jdcho@skku.edu) studies the wearable sensor applications that are expected to create a major impact in global healthcare.
Despite the emergence of smart wearable products, there is shortage of effective and systematic human-centered smart care design technology.
Our human ICT convergence research Lab., called H-Lab. in SKKU uniquely aims to interdisciplinary convergence technology collaborating with information and computing, Healthcare technology, and Cognitive design technology.
With these in mind, our students called “humaneer” (a portmanteau of humanity and engineer) studies innovative technologies with destructive creativity.

Research topics include: Wearable /Healthcare Devices with Activity-driven Cognition.
Human ICT Convergence research invents, develops, and collaborates tangible mobile applications and wearable devices with ongoing advances in activity-driven cognition and sensor technologies to better manage health care that advance the Human ICT Convergence. Aims for immediate solutions for problems and opportunities that arise, as well as long-range research on usable wearable technologies (accelerometers, microgyroscopes, etc) for the better quality of daily activity related in healthy and disabled persons.


Example Projects underway

  • A Wearable Device Sensing and Visualizing Fetal Movements (Lily Kickee)
    (Been Jeon(Computer Eng.), Jae Won Cho(Electronic Eng.) - HCI Korea 2015, Dec. 2014)

    This study purposed to develop smart maternity wear, which is a wearable computer that senses and visualize fetal movements, and to evaluate its usability. Before making the prototype, we conducted a preliminary survey and, based on the results, visualized fetal movements intuitively in the form of fetal footprint. The prototype was built with Lilypad Arduino, conductive thread, pressure sensor, and various LED’s, and then its usability was tested. When satisfaction, fitness, practicality, intuitiveness, and sympathy were evaluated with 50 participants, the use of the smart maternity wear was found to enhance the level of empathy and increase communication among the family members.

  • Transforming Smart Home

    This study purposed to develop smart wer, wchich is a wearable computer that senses and visualize fetal movements, and to evaluate its usability.

  • Smart Wig for cancer patients

    Smart Wig is a wearable device for cancer patients; this item helps them to go outdoors safer. Smart Wig continuously checks the patient’s pulse and body temperature so that it can prepare for the emergency. It also gives alarm to the user’s acquaintances to rescue him/her earlier when the user loses his/her consciousness-this is detected by our fall detection algorithm.

  • Menopause stage monitoring and health-care systems

    We have participated in the study with the hospital “Kangbuk Samsung Medical Center(KSMC)”. The KSMC are running the project of “Assessment of Women's Health During Menopausal Periods”. KSMC will implementa survey about 3000 patients in the target. In order to receive feedback for the many people byaservice system, we induce the patient to attempts to enter information positively. We should build the service system by application, server and so on. Furthermore, we will analyze the collected data, and try to be helpful to the project of KSMC.

  • Light band(Bon Chang Ku-Display, Jun Ho Kim-Electronic Eng., Bon Chang Ku-Information Display, Jung Hun Eom-Communication Design), Finalist, WCC 2014, KAIST

    This is a new form factor combining two different functionality. One is to the Far infrared rays OLED panel which is a medical device to reduce the pain wearing user’s body. And the other is the back posture feedback using vibration sensors. The feedback includes Different color modes.

  • Gait Assist Device” with Data Visulization (Hae Yeon Lee-Media Communication, Sung Yeon Kim-Electronic Eng.), Joo Young Shin-Digital Media Design)

    Previous studies on gait analysis mostly focused on accuracy of measuring gait patterns. This work adds a triggers as Fogg’s B=MAT equations indicated. That is, behavour changes from the three elements such as Motivation, Ability and Triggers. If one od these three elements are missing, The device will not be sustainable in the long run. The first design is adding intuition using info-graphic to collect daily logging. The second design is adding gamification that increases user’s self contributions. If users walk incorrect gait, the footprint will leave a stain in the grass.

  • Heart Map (Sang Sun Park-Management, Noh Gee Young- Graphic Design, and Jeong Dong Nyeok-Interaction Sience)

    When someone feel something about awesome between terrible, there is largely level of emotion changes. So, We researched to catch of this levels of changes. Could we make some responsibility rates from the individual bio-data? We simply start our idea. The idea introducing of our HeartMap, We detect user`s emotion and visualize to cartography map. It supports to decide information decision and responsibility especially in the case of Peer to peer.

  • Better Posture Awareness through Flower-Shaped Ambient Avatar
    (Jeongki Hong, Sunghyun Song, Jundong Cho, Andrea Bianchi), TEI 2015, Stanford University, CA, Jan. 2015

    This work describes an ambient awareness device – a ‘flower avatar’ – which subtly informs users when their posture is bad. The colour of the stem informs the user whether their posture is good or bad, and the bend angle of the stem reflects the angle of their back. The design of the sensor system to collect this information is described, and the various actions/colours the flower provides a playful gamification that triggers user’s motivation in sustainable way.

  • Between US
    (Jeong-ki Hong-Mechanical Eng., Seunghyun Song-Electronic Eng., So-RyangVan-Product Design)

    The device we are trying to develop in this project is a form of wristband having two simple functions. It pairs another coupled wristband through the cellphone via Bluetooth. Then the user can tap or rub the wristband will respond to the signals with feedback of haptic vibrations. We can create many scenarios of using this device such as developing personalized interface created by Lovers. By definition of smart device, the device is intelligent and emotional enough and should be used in right time and to the right person.

  • IoT-based device for interactive smart infant-care (unyoung Park, Bonchang Koo, Joonho Kim, Jundong Cho) - 2014 KSDS Fall international Conference

    Our goal is to make an interactive mobile which can control by parents when apart from their child. The mobile consist of sensors which are camera, microphone, speaker, thermometer, and hygrometer. Parents can perceive child’s activity, voice in addition to temperature and humidity of child’s room..
